Roles For One Mic

We picked the roles today for the show, I put my self forward as the director, I appointed Tayo & Kelvin, yasmin, sam and adam as camera people. Tayo and Kelvin are well expiranced camera operators and i have worked with them before so i can trust them on this shoot. Sam and Yasmin are also very good Camera operators who have shown me their expirance before. Sam and Yasmin are going to be in a sub team on the day. The sub team will be working side the shows presenter on the day of the filming as they have various tasks to complete. Gov was appointed the editor as he is a very experienced editor and has done some TV work before.

Analysis (For Assesement): Power Artefact

I decided i should analyse my own artefact to see if it did meet my expectations. The sequence begins with us in a medium shot of character 1. This continues as character 2 walks in, characters make conversion and greet each other with a youthful ‘spud’, symbolizing they are friendlies. Adhering to popular culture, character 2 wears a t-shirt stating ‘supply high grade’ which is also a euphemism for the supply of marijuana, which is a well placed prop. The pan technique which involves the camera to move back and forth between characters engages the audience in the conversation and allows them to take a perspective as if they were there. Character 1 introduces to the narrative a dilemma, this dilemma is adopted by the audience, this prompts them to ask questions. Character 2 then prompts character 1 to make a decision, and the film freezes. Ten seconds are allowed for the audience to make their choice on what they would do rather than what they think is the socially acceptable. As this is anonymous audiences are more comfortable to make true choices.

Mise-en scene analysis: camera movement reflect the viewer’s perspective. Colour was warm and hospitable, it was natural and lighting was well balanced. A mug was used as an ash tray to reflect realities of student living. Acting seemed hesitant at times which added to the realism. This gave the viewer time to make up their decision, about the direction of the film. for easily readable concepts.

Content analysis of my artefact revealed items and images with manifest (internal) meanings, for example the mug, the joint, logos on jumper, logo on t-shirt of characters. The joint displays a latent meaning of an illegal substance used to create a desired state, the manifest meaning serves as a cue for action. The action is the response from the initiation of a pressured activity. Therefore the joint signifies a dilemma within itself to smoke or not to smoke?

In addition discourse analysis helped me to explore the natural occurring language of my piece and if it reflects the message. As character 1 describes his dilemma this projects the realism shows through his tone, speech breaks and hesitations. Noam Chomsky‘s study into language in the real world has found links to performance-related errors. Consequently, the latent meaning is expressed throughout the theme; the natural occurring cues are the purpose of conversation which in my own summary concludes a stressed student in need of positive inspiration who naturally socializes with a bud who could quite possibly offer this positive reinforcement. The main theme presents an idea that peers experience apprehension about their actions to receive or reject the proposal from the ‘pressurer’.

During the smoke it version a close up of joint smoking (containing tobacco) was taken at the end, this shows authenticity and because we cannot see the character the consequence is left to our imagination. The clip displays evidence of non verbal codes; such as when characters greeted by ‘spud’ this highlights the British youth culture which primarily was adopted from American youth culture.

Finally semiotic analysis codes which are agreed by society, portable laptop shows modern living student. As a media producer I deter from adding signs and symbols which are not present in contemporary society. When filming a natural shot, I let the audience interpret the message for what it is without hidden meanings and manifest content interrupting. If there is one thing I have learnt about audiences it is that they don’t like being deceived.

An important point to consider is ethical barriers in media production. Who may be harmed or affected by my video is question I asked myself. Well initially people may be swayed to make the decision to smoke it, but as it isn’t that interactive they will not have to wait until the situation arises in their future and takes them by surprise, in retrospect they may think back to the video and remember they have 2 choices. Consequently my artefact functions to educate the public by raising awareness and involve the youth of today in some decision making. The artefact matters to me as I have many times sat in the position of character 1.

Process and Development (For Assessement): Who’s Choice?

So the idea that i have picked for my power artefact explores the issues behind the power of peer pressure and the power of choice. The purpose of my idea is to show that popular culture still is not good at saying things explicitly where as an individual will have less of a reason to be concerned about what he or she says and asks, as they do not have the world judging them just a few people in his or her social groups.

Milgram suggest that choice is a myth, yet in modern western society we are nurtured into making choices that are not fully our own, so not in line with our own values. However we are happy to go ahead with this. By conforming to popular culture we are gaining prestige and recognition from main stream society.

So I recently saw this video and it made me question what the message popular culture was trying to say. When something is not politically correct to say to publicise, euphemisms are used.  For example in the video we see the 2 men singing and saying “Get down with the Trumpets” which is a euphemism for get down with smoking marijuana. I have done extensive research in to the area of governmental control yet it has to be argued that peers can exert dominance over other peers and this leads to people adopting popular culture. Be it a mass popular culture or a smaller system of popular culture such as that seen in schools and other institutions for example the work place.

“the idea here is people should have a say in the decision depending on how much it will affect them” – Michael Albert

Day1: Preparation and trial run So when it got down to planning this artefact, I allowed time to think and explore possible routes. I knew that I wanted the story to flow naturally and sound like it was not staged or scripted. I was looking for honest reactions where a character was given a scenario to play. It is important to me to create an ecologically valid situation in which the user can impose their natural response as they would in a social situation. So I want a sort of experiment that is being filmed but with also replicate real life situations.  Pre-planning is essential. The narrative arc this artefact will flow is as follows:

  • We start with Character 2 (Male) walking into the room where character 1 (Female) is sitting and working on his laptop.
  • Character 2 sits down and greets and initiates a conversation with Character 1.
  • After a short while and finding out what Xter1 is facing Xter 2 offers Xter 1 some marijuana.
  • The next part is where the Audience decide how the film should end.
  • Either he accepts and we see him with his first initiation with Marijuana or He rejects and Xter 2 gets high on his own.

The piece should last up to 5 minutes as it is not scripted. Actors will be given a brief from the director/camera operator. I planned on how my message should come across through this piece, I wanted it reflect direct peer pressure in an open and social setting and involve the viewer as much as possible. i thought of to engage a viewer in a social experience  using interactive techniques. I will demonstrate this when I edit the artefact.

Day 2: After the idea came, I needed to find a location where I could see the film unfold. After alot of thought, I decided there is no were better to film than in my own living room as this is somewhere peer pressure has taken place in real life. The room was big enough for setting up tripods and sound as well as lighting. There was power sockets plotted around the room for more creative control over lighting and positions. One of the main reasons for this Location was the fact that it was free and that I could be hospitable to potential actors as my kitchen was meters away. Food always keeps actors happy FACT! As for equipment I have decided to film this in a digital form as messing with tape hasn’t been reliable for me in the past. I will be using a Canon 5D DSRL

Canon EOS 5D

5D with 50MM Lens

which will give me the full frame sensor just like a real film camera. I will shoot at 24fps at 1080p HD resolution, this captures a lot of detail in the shots. This camera is also very good at low lights as I will be filming indoors. I hope to use an array of fixed focal lenses such as the 24, 50 and 85mm lenses. The 50mm will be a good lens to use as it creates good depth of field, which gives that cinematic look. Sound is just as important as the picture you see. In this piece I will make sure I capture sound externally and make sure it is of good quality. I intend to use a riffle Mic to get this clear audio that I need. As we all know as media producers lighting is key to any production. I want the room to look natural, and I want shadows to look real so I intend to use the current lighting set up already in my living room. I room consist of 3 lights, one powerful light on the ceiling, and 2 lamps. This will give me sufficient lighting to fill the frame with a well lit picture.

Test shots:

Here are some screen shots of test footage that I filmed with my flat mate. this allowed me to get a sense of frames and how the room would look in the final run.

We filmed the sequence a little diffident than that on the narrative arc. we had out protagonist walk into the room instead of her already being there. Doing these test shots allowed me to get a better feel of how our final piece was going to look and with professional actors it would look much better.

Day 3:

Today is the shoot day all the equipment is booked and set. but dreadful news arrives that meant I couldn’t carry on with the shoot. My actors were stranded at London Euston, the train service can to a halt as over head power cables came down. This disastrous news made me think quick on m

y toes. I had everything set, Camera, sound and Lights. All I needed now was the actors. I had to get help of my colleagues. I asked Gov and Geri to give me a hand. I was now an actor and not a camera man. I still gave directions.

Having Gov and Geri there helped me decide and tweek the way i was going to film the piece. Geri decided that as camera woman she should get some creative control over the framing and as a director a said go ahead. She got the shot a little closer than originally planed.

So i briefed Gov. I found out that he had neve

r smoked anything before so his reaction to the piece should be good.  I asked him to react naturally to the situation i was going to present him with. From the test shot we came up with the story of having a hand in. I asked Gov to play with this as he is all to familiar with hand in’s being a university student himself. He was told that there will be two endings so he first needed to give me his reaction to saying no. Then yes.

As we started we had a few glitches with the camera. It wasn’t performing well in the room. So it was reset and off we went.  The sequence now filmed as the above sequence.

The dialogue was very smooth and each take was the first take. I wanted to capture the most natural reaction possible, i knew repeating the shot would result in the the actors sound scripted. I had to hope that nothing went wrong through the shots and that aesthetics were  looking well. When it came to the decision we kept the camera rolling and allowed the next part to commence. This time it was yes. Overall in my opinion we coped well with the constraints. In addition, Gov had fulfilled the role well and I wasn’t too bad my self.

I feel I gave constructive directions and worked well with the team and under the circumstance

s. I had to alternate between director and actor however I was well prepared with the way I wanted to portray my message and thought this was achieved. It has certainly gave me a better professional perspective and experience.

POST PRODUCTION

Post production came soon after film and it was fairly simple to edit with three separate timelines. I ensured that the lighting was well at the time of shooting the shot film so i

t was unnecessary to conduct colour corrections. I made sure that  the audio on captured on the solid state disk recorder was synced with the audio captured on the video. The edit was kept simple and used only fades and cuts for transitions. I added text at the end to act as an underlay for the links I needed to  create on youtube. I used clear and bold fonts to make it easy for the viewer to understand instruction. Fancy editing can often obstruct the main message of the piece.

I had to export 3 separate video files from  3 separate timelines using Adobe Premier Pro CS5 which all exported perfectly for online viewing. This moves on to the main part of how this aretfact is able to work.

the process of how i linked videos together was by using annotations on YouTube  annotations allows for users to live link over their videos. this creates for a wonderful opportunity for user interaction with the video.

This is where the real power lies behind my artefact. this idea of giving viewers two different outcomes is related to game theory.

After uploading the 3 videos, using youtube I added a 10 second pause at the end of the first video. This is where I had created 2 links to 2 separate endings to prompt the viewer into making a choice.

I would like to point out if the technology was available to me I would have filmed it in 3D giving the viewer an intimate relation to the narrative feeling apart of the setting.

Overall, the process was kept simple as complex theories are easier to display this way to the viewers. My goal was to display peer pressure in a personal and familiar way without all the euphemisms and political correctness imposed on us by popular culture. To conclude I feel it reflects the theme of power in society along a spectrum of situations.

Research (For Assessment): Ideas are popping up.. flying… and most are getting shot down!! War In My Mind!!

So last time we had a brief discussion on general Power Structures so without going too far back into history let’s start our journey in the 19th Century. During this era there was many collapses of empires including the Holy Roman and Mughal Empires.

During this era the rise and influence of the British and American empires were in expansion.  After the topple of the French Empire the British Empire became the world leading power, controlling one quarter of the world’s population  and one fifth of the total land in the world.

So as this neo liberalist vision of the Anglo American Empire started to pick up momentum and our world started to change. Wars and occupations were waged and the British Empire was so big that the sun never set on it. Now to fast forward to the 20th century and the world was facing a world war in the wake of the new century.

One of the names that popped up in the lecture this week was Edward Bernays,

العربية: إدورد بارنايز. Česky: Edward L. Berna...
Edward Bernay’s

so I decided to do some more reading into whom he was. I also watched the documentary ‘Century of the self” by Adam Curtis, which gave me a visual insight into the world of Bernays. At the wake of the war The USA send Edward Bernays a master mind in propaganda to Austria to win the minds and hearts of the Austrian people and manipulate them into believing the story presented to them. Bernays had applied his uncle, Sigmund Freud’s

English: Sigmund Freud with his cigar

ideas. Freud had beliefs that the man should never be equal to one another and the mass needs to be controlled otherwise they will release the repressed animal state we once evolved from.

After WW1 and when Bernays got back to the states he commented that, “I decided that if you could use propaganda for war, you could certainly use if for peace” the term propaganda was associated with the Germen Nazi party and was given negative press. So Bernays decided that he will call this the “Counsel on Public Relations” He set up office in New York and the rest is history.

Rule the World!
Propaganda

After  finding out about this manipulation of the masses that was giving so much power to its executer, i decided to do further reading into this area and came across some interesting perspectives of the world.

Karl Marx theorized religion was the opiate of the masses pre 19th Century but now the media is the new opium and celebrities are our gods. Guy Debord

Guy Debord
Guy Debord

agrees with Marxism and argues marketing is also an opiate. The new world order introduced a free market capitalist economic society, where greed has become the main motive of life. this greed fuels the markets growth.

Debord states In his book from 1967 Society Of the Spectacle “The spectacle is a permanent opium war which aims to make people identify goods with commodities and satisfaction with survival that increases according to its own laws. But if consumable survival is something which must always increase, this is because it continues to contain privation. If there is nothing beyond increasing survival, if there is no point where it might stop growing, this is not because it is beyond privation, but because it is enriched privation”.

So this statement tells us that the human is constantly striving to to fulfil desires and the survival of the fittest has become the survival of the bourgeoisie. Because they own the means and relations of production this creates a relationship with the consumer through supply and demand and this is how the power and authority is exerted over the masses. so we want what they have and produce. This dominance over the masses has made to believe that these materials are a necessity in our survival in a dog eat dog capitalist society.

I have learnt a lot over the last few days. Ideas are blooming. From my research i have found out that the world is not what we think it is and influence comes from the very top of societies. Keep your eyes open for the next blog on Power.

So after some thought about his week’s task I have come to the point where I have to come up with idea. I am a very dreamy thinker, i think ideas through like a journey and step by step visualise how a project of the nature could unfold. If any week spots arise it gets nipped at the bud. So in affect an elimination process has been taking place over the past few days.

I have thought a lot about how power has been exerted over populations, Century of self, by Adam Curtis

Century of Self

was very, very enlightening and helped me get closure of other ideas and views I have had on the world. It reinforced a lot of what I already know to be true. The world is a facade we are literally a huge herd of sheep and our shepherds for this huge vogue of life are a few people, “The 1%”

But I didn’t want to do something that is on everyone’s minds at the moment. I had ideas of going down to London to meet with a few Occupy London organisers, that I had met whilst in London last a few weeks back. But I wanted to bring my idea down to a personal level.

So the ideas I had was times were either I exerted power or when I was the person the power was exerted on.  I can have bold ideas and sometimes I can exert my views on other people. Some people listen to me some people don’t. So the power lies with you, but it’s how much I can persuade you to follow my views.

After in depth research on milgram  burneys… I found persuasion and pressure was used to make people do things which they though were involuntary however this was there driving force.

In sociological studies it is concluded that peer pressure exists as in group individuals want to gain prestige from higher people in the group. This comes from our desire to fit in and especially amongst teenagers who are in to experimentation. However peer pressure can came at any time in your life, even preschool children.

Identity shift effect reveals we shift our identities to avoid rejection from our peers and to conform to group standards. When conforming to these pressures an internal conflict occurs within the individual. A feeling of guilt occurs because their personal values are being repressed. So the identity shift occurs when the individual tries to minimise this conflict and becomes part of the in group by adopting their norms and values.

Social cognitive theory predicts that behaviour comes before self perceptions. Albert Bandura

Albert Bandura

Albert Bandura

states that from a young age we live vicariously (Also see The link in the next paragraph) through our parents. There after we imitate the actions of peers our new ‘role models’ and during this process we adopt their value system. When peer pressure does occur individuals tend to imitate first and ask questions later. So in conclusion adults are subject to peer pressure also. In my piece I wanted to incorporate all these examples showing just how one person can be powerful at pressurising. To conclude what Bandura’s is saying, simple conversation can not be effective in altering behaviour. There is a reciprocal interaction between cognitive behavioural/environmental factors, and the relations we have with others. We observe the action of others through modelling and use this as a guide for action in later occasion. However learning through classical conditioning (trail and error) one can perform behaviours he or she would not commonly display.

A consequence of vicarious reinforcement is adopting the value system of negative role models. The theory of de individuation explains why one engages in uncivilised behaviours around their peers. Zimbardo

English: Picture taken during the XXIX Interna...

Philip Zimbardo

points out that when in a group, people conform to de individuated behaviour. It means people act in a way that is uncharacteristic of themselves and commit acts as part of a group, in this sense they feel less responsible for their own behaviour. Amongst our peers our sense of individual socialised identity is lost. spliting the guilt. So doing something negative, isn’t so negative any more.

Drugs are something that is associated with peer pressure. First of all form a young age during school peer pressure was always depicted as being negative and evil. But like Berney’s I believe that influence does work and sometime if you feel something is right and you can get someone to also experience the same benefits. It should be justified. Even if it’s negative? So people will imitate their peers, knowing that they will be rewarded with prestige. Our friends and family are the most credible sources of information to us even if they have no evidence to prove it.

More development next time….
