I hope the last discussion on power has been enlightening for you. So we touched a little in to the start of the 20th century and how propaganda was used to win the minds and hearts of the public.
Free markets were in full swing by now across most of the world and the system that worked on the concept of supply and demand needed to do everything in its power to get the demand up. Do you remember I mentioned Bernaysfrom the last post. Well he started to be a more prominent force in driving this new world. His uncle freud
was in need of money after the war, his work was not seen well in Austria, so Bernays
got his uncles work to be published and widely distributed, he was a very social man having lunch with the president was a regular occurrence. Freuds works was now being used by the government as they saw the potential it had on control.
A lot of people were getting interested in Freuds Psycho-analysis and stated to apply ideas into practice, many surgeries poped up were people were being experimented on. The populations of Britain and America were being used as guinea pigs.
One of the most influential study’s was Zimbardo’s Stanford prison study. Zimbardo’s witnessed participants engaged in the roles of prisoners and prison guards. All prisoners’ rights had become privileges (toilet, eating, wearing eye glasses). After the initial rebellion the participants acting as guards displayed authoritarian qualities and prisoners passively accepted the abuse. Giving the prisoners ID numbers to refer to the prisoners became demoralised and apathetic. It was concluded the reality of the situation had been blurred, even when they were unaware of them being watched the guards played this role. It was abandoned after 6 days due to high psychological stress suffered by prisoners. In conclusion were we are all capable of acting out of character when placed in a powerful situation.
So the world was moving in a direction were it was believing it was free and democratic, the power was in the hands of the people and they were believing to feel it. As before guilt was used to modify people’s behaviour, now it was being influenced, persuaded to, peer pressure from group to group it was becoming infectious as the man was becoming free.
