The Term Has Died, Long Live The Term: Reflection 4 (Final Post)

Many people would ask, what is a documentary? Well for those of you that don’t fully understand the phenomena of documentaries. Here is a quick and plain English explanation.

A documentary is a movie that attempts, in some way, to capture reality. Even though the scenes are carefully chosen and arranged, they are not usually scripted, and the people in a documentary film are not usually actors. A documentary film may rely on voice-over narration to describe what is happening in the footage, in other films, the footage will speak for itself. Often, a documentary film will include interviews with the people in the film.

My lecturer Mr Ken Fero set me and my army of four other fellow comrades the task of creating our very own 3 minute documentary with the theme of Coventry people. And I’d like to express that the three minute time limit was extremely important to meet.

Our film was going to document the success of one man. That man being Mr Asgar Ali a successful local business man. He is a one of these rare cases of “Rags To Riches” or in our case of 21st century education, heavily structured on terminology. “Social Mobility”. Our working title was “Addicted To Success”, which soon transformed to “Up The Social Ladder”

Why do people make documentaries? Well forget some oxford dictionary scholar explaining it to you. Let me tell you from my understanding. Well from my conception a documentary is a manipulation tool gone wild. You can’t be pure any more everyone is bias one way or another, we can’t be in denial. Even the BBC is bias at times. Well manipulation can be used in a positive way, or as some may refer to as for the greater good.

Our way of manipulating of people, or young people I should say raging from 11-25 is to show them a life which they have been made to believe over the years is the way to lead your life and what is the social norm. We would be showing our viewers a story that progresses through three phases. “The Bad”-“The Reason”-“The Good”. These ideas can be applied to anything referring to social cleaning. These are ideas and structures I think I have discovered, and I applied this to the documentary we produced. Our viewers are made to believe that they can all be like Mr Ali and change, this is only hope given to them to carry on with their lame lives.

Enough of my evil twins influence and let’s carry on with showing you what I got up to and what obstacles I faced with the group as we were progressing n this expedition. I’m not sure who is reading this but if you know me I can be a lazy at times. And the first few lectures were missed by yours truly. This put me at an awkward position as I had to find a group, I was lucky to find a group willing to take me on board. Thanks guys! Well I came, I saw, I concurred. I introduced my-self, showed my ideas and they took it on board, and that’s where the Mr Ali story began.

Don’t think this was going to be the end of my laziness. It strick’ed back again. Leaving me slacking, once again. I got back on track Thanks to the group for moving the meetings to my house. I showed the group that I am capable of doing this project. PDX10 nothing like a Z1, but still works wonders. I went to Mr Ali’s Restaurant and filmed him and asked him a series of questions. Never (well not never but still…) think you can be a one man film crew, as I thought I was that day. I thought everything was going perfect, id only have to forget to set the exposure to ruin the whole shoot. I am afraid that was the case that day and I’ve learn t a lesson, well as the saying goes. “You learn from your mistakes”.

I was highly upset with my performance that day so I arranged another shoot with Mr Ali, this time it would be a full group effort meaning that the exposure wouldn’t go un-noticed. Well PDX10 were all out, capturing some creativeness. We were handed a Sony Handycam and told take it or leave it. Being media producers, low tech equipment alone would not stop us from expressing our wacky ideas. We steamed on with what we had and captured some great footage. Using a tie clip mic with the Marantz was a good way of capturing a very high quality sound which we then synced with the video.

We captured over two hours of footage which was then cut down to 12 then to 6 then to the all important 3 Minutes. It took us about 15 hours of editing to come to our final outcome. Don’t think those 15 hours were plain sailing. We came across many encounter were lack of software knowledge meant we had to delay our process while we researched on how to do a something like doubling a sound track. Because your “Command + C” doesn’t work.

I felt highly important in the group as I captured a lot of the footage and made the film practically throw my eye piece.  I hope unique traits are visible to your eyes. Through this project I boosted my knowledge on group work and time management. This project regardless its size, also helped me learn how to do in depth research. What I gained in knowledge during this process, I feel I can easily adapt into a work atmosphere.

In conclusion I feel me and my fellow comrades came home after a successful mission, even though we lost blood, sweat and tears we all came back stronger and ready for more. This project was a success even though we did have a bumpy ride. But who said it was going to be easy? I certainly didn’t expect calm seas when I left port.

50 Word Review

Do you know success? Mr Ali Does, I think that this man has the right to be flashy.  This moving documentary shows the struggle of local success, Asgar Ali how can say he has come from rags to riches.  We ride shotgun though the area of hillfield’s commonly referred to as just hillz.

Screening For My Audiance

Ellen Terry

This is aperfect location as to many people from coventry still remember it as the “old odeon” this place was made to exhibit video. this place is perfect for our screening as it is only a stone throw from the hillfield’s, where our documentary is initially set. this location also boasts, judgmental and critical thinking viewers who would be-able to provide feedback on our video.

YouTube.

I have chosen YouTube because it is free and it is completely local. Getting this video on YouTube enables me to find out how successful my documentary is based on the number of views. I can also access viewer internationally meaning i have a higher chance of geting my message across.

About 3 Minute Wonder

“3 Minute Wonders are commissioned as a series of four shorts from budding new directors who haven’t yet had the opportunity to make a film for broadcast TV.

Each week is thematically driven. The films are connected by subject, but they also have to be able to stand alone and be understood in isolation.

We generally keep about a month’s worth of films up on the 3 Minute Wonder website, to give you a chance to view ones you may have missed.”

I would also be uploading this video to the following platform which would also help me get through to media producers who could value the work put in to this project. These site are also very media centric.

Step 1: Preparing Your Media for Submission

Create an MPEG-4 file at 320×240 or 640×426.

MPEG-4′s are easy to create in just about any editing program. The most common program for youth filmmakers is Apple’s Final Cut Pro, but you can also use Avid Express and Adobe Premier as long as you have Quicktime Pro. We provide clear instructions on how to convert your movie to an MPEG-4 file for several programs — find instruction guides in the right-hand column.

Why MPEG-4?

MPEG-4 rocks. The quality is simply extraordinary. It’s also the industry standard for online video. The only downside is the large file size, so it might take some time to upload. But it’s really worth the wait!

What if I can’t export to MPEG-4?

If you cannot export to MPEG-4, you will need to buy Quicktime Pro. Then you export whatever format you can, and use Quicktime Pro 7 to convert your video files into MPEG-4. With Quicktime Pro, open up the movie you want to convert. Then go to “File > Export”, select “Movie to iPod(320X240)” and click “save”.

Having technical difficulties? Email us (info@listenup.org) and we’ll try to help.

Step 2: Fill Out Submission Form and Upload!

Please fill out the required information, select your media file, and press the “Submit” button. Note that MPEG-4 files are big and uploading can take a while.

This site is a place where you can upload user generated content, which could appear on a film festival.

This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our work, especially as it is focused on youth. We would be able to reach thousands of our targeted audience during a weekend showing our short 3 minute documentary.

Final Cut of Coventry People – Up The Soical Ladder

Well after Ken’s feedback we sat down and talked about how we could improve on what we had and what we would do to meet Ken’s new feedback. We adjusted our video to what we thought ken was looking for, i hope this is satisfactory and is up to Ken’s expectations.

Steve thanks for your email, but i am sorry for not checking my mail box till after we finished editing.

Give us ur Feedback!!!! Ken Fero's Feeback

The piece has some very strong elements – character, camera work and dynamics.

The main issue you need to look at is pacing and storytelling

By 1.44 we have a very good sense of where he was at and we need to know what he did so try moving the whole section of the restaurant to this point. There is some basic research missing here about his ownership of the restaurant, when he began and what its worth. This could be covered in text on screen which is a little lazy or by him saying it with shots of him walking around the restaurant if you have them.

This would then be followed by the sequence from 1.44 onwards where he is back outside and we then see him walk off in the distance.

You should also consider this last section as you seem desperate to throw in lots of sound bites which does not give the audience time to take in what he is saying, try dropping out one or the bites and putting in shots of him just walking or sitting contemplating.

Generally its working well.

Ken Fero

1st Edit Of Documnetry

This is our first edit, this is yet to be revised.

Reflection 3

We have now started the production phase in our documentary, we are underway finalising the idea we have gathered as well as the research material.

Our group has started to collaborate well with each other and each individual is putting an input toward the project. Our research is still underway, this is to shed further light about Mr Ali’s background.

Our footage was viewed as a group, and we started to seek out possible sequences that we could include in our final production piece. These sequences are being picked to see if they are most affective to our target audience and are able to deliver out key messages. Our group had come up with various sequence that would fit in well in our 3 minute setting however not every member agreed on each sequence. We all gave constructive criticism and at the end this helped us better our choices for the greater good. We also filtered out any unwanted footage that would not be entirely necessary to this process.

We met up on Monday afternoon at my house to begin the editing phase each and every member contributed their own ideas and views regarding the sequencing and structure of the narrative. During this meeting we decided that we would use both stills and video in our documentary to show the liquidity that our character progressed through in his endeavour to success. We also had a few other ideas that we nipped in the bud because they did not seem feasible at the time.

I bear witness that my regiment of gifted young media producers, worked in unison and exhausted their psyche in every avenue that seemed possible, to make this mission a success. I am affirmative that my men and women are on path and our vision to succeed is positive. I am proud to say that i feel mine and my group’s contribution should see us achieve our goals.

Reflection 2

The library is a meeting spot that all students usually favor to. Our group met at the library and we started to gather ideas and objectives we had to meet. If we take a step back and look at the beginning of this module, I myself was slaking, the group I joint was on track but had a problem, they couldn’t pick an idea to document. That was overcome by my arrival to the group as they opted to go for my research idea.
Whilst at the library we decided what we would look up and what we could use as secondary research material. Mr Ali has some radical claims about his lifestyle that many would find hard to believe. I know that his claims are factual and wishes to prove this by using reports and observations made of Coventry during the 70’s 80’ and 90’s. We would use Coventry demographics to tell us the story of life during these periods. We would also be researching into the local classes of Coventry people to see what factor repeats it’s self. We will be using information that refers to the increase and the decrease if job opportunities in Coventry in correlation to the education delivered to the local resident’s, one of whom is Mr Ali. OFSTED reports would help us establish these claims.

In addition, we will also be putting into research the ethnicity data in correlation with crime figures in Coventry. Mr Ali has shared information with us that has triggered this idea. From his own words Mr Ali said that crime was an issue during his upbringing and being infested by it he felt reluctant to do things his peers were doing, some of which included crime.
Furthermore, we would also be researching into the amount of self-employed business men and woman in Coventry, alongside the level of unemployment in the city. Our main motives for these ideas are to embrace the success of Mr Ali and how he became a success without a decent education and without full guidance.

I conclude that so far our ideas we summoned as a group have their foundations firmly in place and out points and direction is north. Our only apprehension at this stage is that our time frame in narrowing and so to speak, we may miss the boat is we don’t run to the pier.

Yo Man Come Pick Me Up ASAP!!!! Reaserch Process :P

How Did I Find My Character?

Once I was briefed about the task in hand, a few possible candidates came to mind. One of the candidates included Mr Asgar Ali. Mr Ali is my uncle and was my previous employer.

I ended up text-ing Mr Ali in which I ask him if he is willing to help his nephew get through his first year at Coventry. Like any caring uncle he said he was willing to do what-ever is required of him, if it meant that I would pass this module. I asked him to come pick me up and take me to his resturant where we could have a meeting.

I kept the conversations professional even though Mr Ali is family. I tried my best to make Mr Ali feel as comfortable as I could with regards to the filming phase. Mr Ali was already familiar with my work and has seen work that I have produced in the past. Mr Ali understood the production phases with surprising detail. I think my uncle is hiding his degree in media.

I explained to Mr Ali what was required of him and how I would portray him in this production. He was happy with the ideas I though at him and he was confident that he would be able to play up to the camera.

I have used my existing relationships with Mr Ali and built it up more professionally, which in affect helped me understand this filming procedure in greater depth. It also helped enhance my personal skills in relationship building and development.
My gut-instincts is telling me that Mr Ali is the right man for this job and has the vital aspects to make this production a success. These include: his story, his wit, his charm, he is quite a treat to the camera and his knowledge of both the streets and the business world allows him to excel in this project.
